Armstrong give and take

Armstrong Cable
Just a few days ago we mentioned that Armstrong added three channels to its basic HD lineup. I suppose that was a premature announcement as now Armstrong pulled The Outdoor Channel from the basic HD lineup to their HD Advantage package. The current channel lineup now appears correct on their website.

Armstrong has always left a bad taste in my mouth. I have been looking at Direct TV more and more. I will definitely drop them if and when Verizon Fios becomes available. They have terrible communication, poor customer service and they just seem to do what they want and not what its customers want. Also I think they are overpriced. Everything is extra. So many stupid packages and what not. What happened to the days when just HBO and Cinemax were extra and all the other channels were standard?
i agree. i never thought i would say this but i miss comcast. they offered more channels for a little bit cheaper price.
Don't blame Armstrong for the majority of the price increases, blame the channels themselves, requesting more and more per year. I've not had a problem the many years I've had their service, and you can always subscribe to just basic.
Just subscrie to basic huh? Basic gets you nothing. That's how they rope you into buying the plus, the digital plus, the HD the HD advantage blah blah. Next thing you know you're paying $150+ for cable and internet every month. Sad thing is there's hardly anything ever on all the garabage, fluff channels you get. Maybe they should allow you to choose what channels you want and price it per channel. What I hate is that they basically have the monopoly on cable service. Its not like you can choose your cable carrier. If that was the case, I would have Comcast.
i can't wait until the FCC finally allows people to choose channels a la carte. i wouldnt need Oxygen or Speed channel. i hope that they do something soon.
Cable is not a right, it's a purchase decision. Nobody needs cable TV, I have several acquaintances who live quite happily without it. If I don't like it, I can go get a dish or live without. Nobody is twisting my arm. I like the local programming on Armstrong and I feel the value is better than a dish, so I choose to subscribe. Also, the FCC will never allow a la carte programming because of the networks, not the cable carrier. Case in point, the new NFL Network that wants $1.25 per subscriber and to be on basic.
Hhmm...
I never said it is a right. But cable companies need to lower prices and realize that not everyone wants certain channels, the consumer needs more options.
And as for your friends who do not have it they will have no television in the next couple years because they are taking away the ability to receive local channels over the air.
And dish and direct TV do offer local channels.
And the networks don’t make any money off of the cable companies carrying their channels. They make it off advertisers. The more cable companies that carry the channels the more advertisers want to pay to be on that.
I do agree with you. Cable prices have gone up. But prices are going up for everything. It costs more for them to send an installer to the house because of gas prices, health care costs, among other factors. 50 some channels on basic is good enough for me. And I said I liked the local "programming" not just the local channels. Coverage of meetings, forums, pageants, parades, and the goofy wrestling guys you CANNOT get on a dish... And I'd love to be able to pick and choose, but that will never happen.
You will be able to receive over the air signals via a converter that the government is helping subsidize prior to shutting the over the air signals down in 2009. There will be a $40 coupon on about a $70 box.
Lastly, the cable networks DO make a large amount of revenue and profit from per subscribers fees. It is actually larger than advertising revenues.
All I am saying is that I wish I could choose my cable provider just like my cellular provider. If it is not a right then why am I stuck with crappy Armstrong? Why can't take my business elsewhere? Your point is moot. There is no choice unless you want to go the Satellite route and I for one, do not. I'd rather have a choice. It creates competition and competitive rates. Armstrong had the market on cable and they know it. Its like a monopoly its Armstrong or nothing. Communist is you ask me.
i agree with the last post. and dont even say well they give you the option of the dish. getting a dish mounted is a hassle. if it goes on some roofs it voids the warranty on a roof and they cant put it on the siding because it ruins the siding.
No, your point is moot. Armstrong owns the lines that run on the poles, under the ground and to your house. It is a private entity, not a public utility. Cellular service does not have that kind of infrastructure investment with millions of dollars of fiber and copper strung out over thousands of miles. Communist, no. Capitalist is more like it. Communist would be if they were required to share their lines.

So if Armstrong owns the lines etc why doesn't Comcast put in their own lines? I can choose my long distance provider and cellular provider but not my cable provider? Hell I can even choose my internet provider. Armstrong has the corner on the market bottom line there is no competition other than a dish so they may as well do whatever the hell they want because we are at their mercy.
